You may be interested in a new book titled, Normalizing Abuse: a commentary on our culture of normalizing abuse by Karen Tate. With a foreword by Matthew fox. I’ve just started reading this, but I think she is discussing the same things you are here. We have to first recognize it individually in our lives, and then collectively change the culture
To: Annabel Ascher and Dr. Jan Peppler: I searched for Karen Tate's book at my library (not there) then widened the search. I found an essay by Karen Tate on this topic in a blog called "Feminism and Religion," and I have a good friend and cohort/teacher who also writes there, Marie Cartier, who first taught me about trauma at home. That triggered me to find a therapist who could help me. So others can read what Ms. or Dr. Tate has to say on our culture of "normalizing abuse" - without having to acquire & pay for the book. Ah yes, Dana, that essay was written a few years ago and just republished again on Feminism & Religion. I'm so glad you found that! Also glad that you resonated with Karen's words and are finding someone to help you. We ALL have suffered abuse - normalized abuse - and it continues to hurt us in varying ways on multiple levels. Sending you love!
