Waiting
A Poem
Waiting for the snow to stop
for spring to come
for the sun to come out
for summer
for autumn
for the holidays
Waiting for the coffee to brew
for cocktail hour
for dinner to be ready
till bedtime
Waiting to grow up
for school to be out
for graduation day
to blow this town
Waiting for the fun to begin
for the pain to end
for the doctor’s appointment
for the diagnosis
for the medicine to work
to feel better
Waiting for the seeds to sprout
for the plants to grow
for the harvest to come in
Waiting to lose the weight
for the self-help program to work
to like what’s in the mirror
Waiting for true love
for the Wedding Day
for the divorce to be final
Waiting for the due date
for the kids to start school
for the kids to leave home
Waiting for the house to close
for the bad neighbors to move
for the house to sell
Waiting for the party to start
for the guests to arrive
for the guests to leave
Waiting for the check to arrive
for the inheritance
for the Big Money
to hit the big time
Waiting for the right time
For REAL life to begin
Waiting for the vacation
for the plane to board
the train to start rolling
the ship to sail
Waiting for the good times to roll
Waiting for the day in court
for the sentence to be up
for the war to end
for the wound to heal
Waiting to retire
to spend more time with the family
to check off the bucket list
Waiting for death
Waiting for Godot

Jaw totally dropped here. What a journey that poem is! Thank you.
(And there's a wee typo--weigh needs a t.)
Your piece really stayed with me. The repetition of “waiting” beautifully captures how much of life can slip by while we anticipate the next moment, the next milestone, or the next relief. What begins with small, everyday things gradually expands into the entire arc of a life, which makes it feel both personal and universal.
The line about waiting “for REAL life to begin” feels like the emotional center of the piece, and the closing reference to Waiting for Godot widens the reflection into something deeply human and existential. It’s simple in structure, but it carries a lot of truth. Thank you for sharing it.
