Dear Undecided Voters,
The decision on July 1st by Trump’s hand picked Supreme Court to overturn the rule of law must now be addressed in relation to your vote.
You may have excellent reasons to be undecided. That is not for me or anyone else to judge. This to is a cornerstone of our democracy. Your right to choose freely.
But another cornerstone was destroyed yesterday in the decision on presidential immunity.
To break it down, the court ruled that immunity exists for “official acts” but not for private acts. It did not enumerate which are which, but rather appointed themselves the arbiter on a case by case basis.
Jumping over the question of whether a president should be given a free pass for criminal behavior under any circumstances, if you look closely you will see that this court is a creature of the far right and that this decision is partisan. It gives the court imperial powers that were clearly not tended by the founders.
And it only helps one person— Donald J. Trump. We needn’t ask why. The answer is obvious.
Let us inquire instead regarding the effect.
Mr. Trump has vowed many things in the case that he is able to regain power in this upcoming election.
He has all but promised to be a dictator on day one. He has threatened to prosecute his enemies merely because they have opposed him. His latest threats are to try Liz Cheney for treason before a military tribunal. Ms. Cheney has merely publicly called him out.
Do you think that is treasonous? Do you think that Mr. Trump’s private enemies should be prosecuted? Should millions of people be deported based on skin color? Is that who we are?
Your vote is your vote, and that is sacred. But this time, the only hope we have for continued American democracy is our collective choice at the ballot box on November 5th.
Our current president has made it clear that even if he had the powers that this Supreme Court has granted Trump in theory, he would not use them. Because he understands what our system is, and he respects it.
Donald Trump cares only for power. He has made that clear, and we must believe him, on this one point.
But what does that have to do with you, the undecided voter?
It is the electoral math. Neither side can prevail without the independent vote in swing states.
That is why I am asking you to put aside any concerns you have regarding Joe Biden. Elect him even with those concerns and in four years there will be another free and fair election and you will be called upon to choose again.
Vote for Trump and in four years, or four months, this great republic will be unrecognizable as a democracy. It is that stark.
If you can’t vote for Biden as such, consider it a vote for democracy itself.
A grateful nation will thank you.
Sincerely,
Citizen Ascher
This, and the current administration has been selected because they are among the best at what they do, not on the mere basis of fealty.
